I've Lost Friends While Building Businesses — And Gained Clarity About People

Building a business is hard. But figuring out who should be building it with you... that’s the part nobody warns you about.

My entrepreneurial journey has been a mix of wins and wipeouts. I’ve built and sold several companies, and I’ve had a few fall apart. When I look back, the successes and failures usually came down to the same thing: people.

Not every friend is meant to become a co-founder. Some are amazing to grab a beer with, but they’re not built for the pressure, uncertainty, and constant follow-through required when you’re creating something from nothing.

I learned that the hard way. I’ve brought friends into businesses only to lose the friendship along the way. Those experiences were tough, but they taught me something important: business exposes who’s ready for the climb and who just likes talking about reaching the summit.

Admittedly, over the years, some have said I’m tough to work with. What they’re really seeing is focus. When you’re in the early stages, being direct, staying on task, and expecting follow-through isn’t being harsh—it’s survival. I don’t expect perfection. I just expect people to show up, do what they say they’ll do, and not leave teammates carrying their weight for them.

But not everyone wants that level of responsibility. And that’s okay—entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. There will always be people who love the idea of building something more than the work required to actually build it.

But for those who are willing to put in real effort—who don’t mind a little elbow grease and aren’t afraid to take a hit when the team needs it—there’s always a seat next to me. You don’t need a team full of all-stars. You just need people who care enough to give their best every time.

If you’re on your own journey, surround yourself with the people who show up with grit, not excuses. And if that’s how you operate, let’s connect.

I'm genuinely curious: what has entrepreneurship taught you about choosing the right people? Share your story below or hit that repost button if this resonates with you. If it does resonate, just know you're not alone. Building a business isn't for the faint of heart.
