AI Ethics: Why 'Can We?' Isn't the Same as 'Should We'?
In AI, the questions "Can we?" and "Should we?" are worlds apart.
Too often, teams get caught up in the thrill of what "Can we" do?
- Can we build it faster?
- Can we scale it bigger?
- Can we push the limits of what data reveals?
The answer is almost always yes.
But the harder — and more important — question is "Should we?"
- Should we build this at all?
- Should we automate this decision?
- Should we train this model with that data?
"Can we?" speaks to technical capability. "Should we?" speaks to human responsibility.
The first drives innovation. The second defines our values.
If we don't pause to ask should we?, we risk creating systems that are powerful, but not principled. Smart, but not wise. Capable, but not trustworthy.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: Every AI system we build is making a statement about what we believe is acceptable. Every dataset we use is a choice about whose voices matter. Every automation we implement is a decision about what human judgment we're willing to sacrifice.
The future of AI won't be defined by what's technically possible.
It will be defined by whether we had the courage to draw the line between "can" and "should."
