Finding Rhythm: A CEO's Take on Work-Life Balance
When your work is also your passion, "balance" stops being automatic—it becomes something you have to actively build.
I love what I do at Lucus Labs. Building new tech, solving problems, creating things that didn't exist before—that's the stuff that gets me up in the morning. But here's the catch: I'd do this for fun anyway. Which means if I'm not careful, work just... never stops.
For a long time, I didn't see that as a problem. But eventually, I realized that loving your work doesn't mean you should do it 24/7. Because even passion needs fuel. And if you never step away, you run out.
So I had to get intentional about it:
My calendar blocks off personal time like it's a client meeting. Because it is—just with myself.
My workspace is physically separate from my living space. Even at home. It sounds small, but it makes a huge difference.
I forced myself to find hobbies outside of tech. Laser cutting, hiking, traveling with my wife and our two dogs. Things that have nothing to do with code, business plans, or customer calls.
This isn't about "escaping" work. I don't want to escape it. But I've learned that stepping away is what lets me come back sharper, more creative, and actually excited—not just grinding.
Balance isn't a perfect 50/50 split. It's a rhythm. And when you find that rhythm, you don't just avoid burnout—you rediscover why you started in the first place.
So here's my question for you: How do you find work-life balance—especially when you genuinely love what you do?
